Furnace makes a very loud vibrating boom & extra flames upon starting

How dangerous is this? I called maintenance at my apartment complex and they say they've never heard of this. I've turned the furnace off for the night and can't help to think they should send a technician promptly as it is freezing temperatures in my area, but they are laid back in saying they can't send anyone till tomorrow. Am I wrong to be concerned?
