garage propane furnace is blackening our siding inside the garage.

i installed a used propane furnace in my garage, the type that you hang from the ceiling. for some reason when we run the furnace we don't notice anything right away but the new siding that we installed in the garage is getting dirty, like black sute on it. can you tell me what would cause that to happen?
