good day,
nozzles do wear out and this will give a rumbling sound. also if your unit is burning rich and plugging up the fins and rumbles too. changing the nozzle and regular maintenance cleaning the fins is a must. correct air flow to nozzle size is also important to get correct combustion and co2 exahust. you should not get alot of black soot at any rate, if you are getting a rich black burn and do not have the experience to correct this condition, you should contact a heating expert with a combustion analyzer to get the most economical burn. also annual changing of the fuel oil filter is recommended.
